Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental concerns that we are facing today. In America alone, we discard 30 million tons of plastic each year - and only 8% makes it to the recycling bin. That is a staggering number! Most plastic that is not recycled ends up in our oceans and has a number of harmful effects on the fragile ecosystem. As we are becoming more and more aware of our plastic consumption, we realized that an area where we have the most single-use plastic is in the bathroom. Slowly but surely, we have introduced more socially conscious practices into our routine, with one being the toothbrush from MABLE.
With our first introduction to MABLE, we were immediately impressed and knew we wanted to share their mission with our community of change-makers. MABLE is a company dedicated to sustainable smiles. When they learned that about 1 billion toothbrushes end up in landfills each year, they decided that something had to change. Each toothbrush is made out of bamboo that is sustainably harvested from a forest in Ningbo, China, - a completely renewable source and naturally antibacterial and water resistant. Did you know that bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth? The brush is chic and designed to stand upright, so no mess, and you can choose the color that best represents you (the paint on the brush is even plant-based and nontoxic)! We love that the handle is completely biodegradable and that even the bristles are non-toxic, BPA-free nylon, and made in the USA. Even better, Mable chooses plastic-free packaging! The toothbrush box design uses folding tabs instead of glue to hold it together, and it’s made from unbleached, recycled cardboard. They also use soy-based inks to print the box design!
The fact that MABLE is so committed to the environment is commendable, but they do not stop there! They are dedicated to equipping children with healthy oral hygiene. For every toothbrush that is purchased, they donate one to a child in need in the states. However, they did not want to just stick with the one for one approach, but wanted to take an active approach in their community. MABLE goes school to school to teach kids about sustainable choices, personal health, and how products like the MABLE brush ensure that we don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.
We are so incredibly honored to be working with MABLE and supporting their mission of sustainability, giving, and educating the next generation of change makers!
